The single-story 8,000sqft residence occupies an expansive property located in the Little Dume Beach neighborhood of Malibu. Organized as a series of white stucco volumes on the gently sloping side the home creates both, open patios, and intimate courtyards on all sides. Continuous floor surfaces and wall-to-wall glazing fluently connect the home’s interior with these newly created outdoor rooms.

Conceived as an oasis, located close to the beach, spaces are designed to be open and airy, and finishes are elemental and natural, including oak, cedar, travertine, plaster, and white smooth troweled stucco.  Filtered daylight enters the home and direct sunlight reflects off the walls and pools outside.  The calm and tranquil environment created is that of a retreat, homeowners and visitors alike feel no need to leave.

The residence’s design is a play on walls and floating roofs. High wood clad ceilings create spacious rooms. Four-sided, uninterrupted glazing below the buoyant roof opens views towards the sky and distant mountain ridges. A long, transcended wall creates an axis below the floating rooflines and connects the sweeping front and rear yards visually to the interior. This enclosure frames the entry sequence leading from the motor court through the long, Aloe tree lined forecourt into the travertine and glass enclosed living room. From there it further leads across the pool decks to a mature Live Oak grove at the end of the property.

At the other side of the axial wall the home’s bedrooms are organized linearly yet separated by private courtyards.  A guesthouse with its own entrance flanks the bedroom wing at the front, a short flight of stairs leads to the primary bedroom suite at the rear. The primary suite’s elevated placement opens views across the pool area towards the distant horizon while allowing for private outdoor areas.

A 50ft lap pool is aligned with the entry steps and open foyer. An infinity edge feeds water to the adjacent second leisure pool which extends out from the kitchen and family room wing.  Access to the nearby Little Dume Beach is made convenient with a separate entrance leading from a small courtyard, surfboard storage area, and large mudroom to the kitchen.

This home is the second residence Standard designed and completed in Malibu. The first residence was featured in Elle Décor earlier this year.
